A true lateral starting point, Holbox is accessed by ferry from Chiquila where you’ll find an island of laidback sandy streets, barefoot accommodation, white-sand beaches and in summer an opportunity to swim and snorkel with the friendly whale-sharks. This hidden gem of a colonial city is untouched by tourism compared to rival cities such as Merida and Oaxaca. However, the architecture has been beautifully restored and wandering the quaint streets is a pure delight coupled with Campeche’s coastline setting. Top off the visit by staying at the converted Hacienda Puerta Campeche ideally located in the heart of the Old Town.
