“After a life-saving neck operation in 2001, Nick decided to end his successful 20-year publishing career at Newsweek International and, “because I’ve always wanted to”, take a 2-year sabbatical around the world. Nick’s journey initially took him overland through the silk road countries of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Pakistan and then up along the Karakoram highway into Kashgar in North West China, then by 4WD across Tibet via Lhasa into Kathmandu, Nepal. Countries soon to follow were northern India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. Certain animals, birds and fish were on his bucket list as well as a boating experience so Borneo for Orang Utangs, Indonesia for Komodo Dragons, Papua New Guinea for birds of paradise and the Solomon Islands to attain a dive master certificate/tick the fish box both visually and on rod and line as well as sail on a catamaran through its Maravo and Vona Vona lagoons.
Driving a 4WD land cruiser through the Kimberley region of North West Australia just had to be done so a trip camping all the way from Broome to Darwin and then from Cape Tribulation to Adelaide soon addressed this urge! New Zealand north and south with his old mate Jon Perry was a great personal experience. Then it was time for South America – a new Continent to Nick but certainly still his favourite. Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. This saw the end of this particular dream. Time for the next – laterallife!
Nick founded laterallife in 2004. Since starting laterallife Nick has added Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, more Sri Lanka and India experiences, Bhutan, Japan, outer Indonesian islands/Sulawesi, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa to his travel CV with many more still on his radar.
Laterallife’s strength lies in Nick’s own experiences and love of travelling and life.”
Richard has been a practising lawyer having worked all his life at a major London law firm. After 9 years as Senior Partner, he belatedly took a sabbatical organised by laterallife with a fantastic 8 week tour around South America. As a result of this he got the travel bug and was delighted when Nick and Steve invited him to join laterallife as non-executive Chairman. He is still in awe of their destination knowledge and the fact that they have personally visited every location that they recommend and is helping them structure their business and approach to their clients. A big change from the law!
A brief spell in the world of finance was enough to trigger Steve’s first sabbatical, an 18 month trip through Latin America’s 22 countries taking in everywhere and everything from Carnival in Rio to volunteering in Nicaragua. In 2010, Steve took a second sabbatical journeying through 7 countries in Asia and experiencing over 400 hotels! Steve’s destination knowledge is rivalled only by Nick’s and with his first-hand knowledge he can advise on all of Latin America, Canada, China, India and South-East Asia.
Having backpacked around Latin America during (and after) university without a guide book, Emma was well and truly bitten by the travel bug. Over the past 12 years working in the travel industry, Emma has kept going back for more, enjoying nothing more than escaping to those ‘difficult to reach’ places like the Skeleton Coast, Easter Island and even Antarctica. Emma has got ‘been there’ pins all over the globe, including Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Cambodia as well as Kenya, Namibia and Botswana.
Nico Rossi Ganzer
Nico is passionate about the world having lived, worked and studied in a number of countries before settling in London. Nico enjoys the big wild outdoors and likes to keep it adventurous, hence there’s a good chance you’ll find her climbing the Andes in Argentina, camping in the Sahara desert or tracking bears on the Rockies. Nico would love to explore the extreme edges of the world even more with the Arctic, the Himalayas and the Amazonian forest high on her lateral list!
Jessica grew up with a love of travel and adventure. Whilst attending University in Sydney Australia she travelled vastly throughout New Zealand, South East Asia, China & Japan. After briefly returning the UK she set off again this time for South America. Soon after the lure of living abroad saw her move to Canada where she spent time living in Vancouver, Whistler and even on the arctic tundra in Manitoba during the polar bear season. Most recently she experienced life as a tour guide running tours across the USA.
